## 🔬 Bird DNA Testing: Często zadawane pytania

### How does bird DNA sexing work?

Bird DNA sexing identifies a bird’s biological gender by analyzing the CHD gene on sex chromosomes (Z i W). Males have two Z chromosomes (ZZ), while females have one Z and one W (ZW). Using **PCR (Reakcja łańcuchowa polimerazy)** technology, we amplify the CHD-Z and CHD-W gene fragments. The test shows one DNA band for males and two bands for females — delivering **99.9% accurate results** for any bird species at any age. ### What sample types do you accept?

We accept three sample types for avian DNA testing:

- **Blood samples** — 2-3 drops of blood on specialized filter paper (highest DNA yield)
- **Feather samples** — 2-3 freshly plucked chest feathers with intact follicles (quill/calamus)
- **Eggshell membrane** — fragments from recently hatched eggs with visible membrane tissue

Each sample type has specific collection requirements. Visit our [sample handling guide](/services/)
for detailed instructions. **Do not** collect naturally fallen feathers, cut feathers, or down feathers — these lack sufficient DNA.

### How long does DNA testing take?

Standard turnaround time is **2-4 business days** from sample receipt. Express service (24-hour turnaround) is available for urgent cases. International shipping typically adds 3-7 days via FedEx/DHL document express. Total door-to-door: approximately 5-11 days for standard service. [Detailed timeline guide →](/how-long-does-bird-dna-testing-take/)

### How much does a bird DNA test cost?

Our standard bird DNA sexing test starts at **$8 per bird** for orders of 50+ próbki. Single-sample testing starts at $15. Bulk discounts are available for breeders, woliery, and research institutions (100+ próbki: $6/bird, 500+ próbki: $4.50/bird). Additional services (disease panel, performance gene testing, parentage verification) are priced separately. [Complete pricing breakdown →](/how-much-is-a-dna-test/)

### What bird species can you test?

Our CHD gene-based DNA sexing method works for **all bird species** regardless of age, w tym:

- **Racing pigeons** — our most common service, trusted by breeders worldwide
- **Parrots** — African Grey, Macaw, Cockatoo, Amazon, Conure, Budgie, Lovebird, Cockatiel
- **Birds of prey** — Falcon, Hawk, Eagle, Owl
- **Poultry** — Chicken, Turkey, Duck, Goose, Quail, Pheasant
- **Exotic & zoo birds** — Toucan, Hornbill, Flamingo, Crane, Penguin

Browse our [species-specific guides](/category/species-guides/)
for detailed instructions per bird type.

### Do DNA test results expire?

NIE. DNA test results **do not expire** — a bird’s biological sex is determined at fertilization and remains constant throughout its life. The test certificate remains valid permanently. Jednakże, we recommend keeping digital copies as paper certificates may degrade over time. [More about test validity →](/do-dna-tests-expire-unveiling-the-truth-about-dna-test-shelf-life/)

### Can you test for diseases through DNA?

Tak. In addition to gender testing, we offer **PCR-based disease screening** for racing pigeons, w tym:

- Cirkowirus gołębi (PiCV)
- Pigeon Rotavirus
- Herpeswirus gołębi (PHV)
- Adenowirus
- Paramyxovirus (PPMV-1)
- Salmonella, Chlamydia, and Mycoplasma

We also offer **performance gene testing** (LDHA, DRD4, MSTN, PŁACZ1, etc.) for racing pigeon breeding optimization. Browse our [full testing catalog →](/order-bird-dna-tests/)

### How should I collect and ship samples?

Follow these steps for best results:

1. **Blood:** Use a sterile lancet to prick the bird’s brachial vein. Collect 2-3 drops on our provided FTA card or plain filter paper. Let dry completely (15-20 min) before packing.
2. **Feather:** Pluck 2-3 chest feathers firmly (not cut). Ensure the white/translucent follicle base is intact. Place in a paper envelope — **never use plastic bags** as moisture causes DNA degradation.
3. **Opakowanie:** Place samples inside folded A4 paper. Ship via FedEx/DHL document express to our Zhangjiakou lab address.

### Is the sampling process safe for my bird?

Tak. All sampling methods are **minimally invasive** and designed for bird safety:

- Blood collection uses a tiny lancet prick — similar to a human finger-prick glucose test
- Feather plucking is quick and birds rarely show distress
- Eggshell collection is completely non-invasive (post-hatch)

We’ve processed over 100,000 samples with zero reported bird injuries. Most birds resume normal behavior immediately after sampling.

### Can I build my own bird DNA testing lab?

Tak. We offer **laboratory setup consulting and equipment supply** for organizations wanting in-house avian DNA testing capability. Our support includes:

- Lab design and workflow optimization
- RT-PCR equipment procurement and installation
- Reagent sourcing and custom primer development
- Staff training and protocol documentation
- Ongoing technical support and quality control
