## **Instruction on Handling Racing Pigeon Samples**

- **Wear protective gear:** Put on latex gloves.
- **Desinfecção:** Spray both hands with disinfectant alcohol for complete disinfection. Allow the alcohol to dry.
- **Labeling:** Use a marker to label the clean self-sealing bag with the pigeon’s information (por exemplo, owner’s name, leg band number).
- **Feather Collection:** Select slightly thicker feathers from the pigeon’s tail (avoiding tail feathers) or the chest and abdomen. Quickly pluck a small bunch (preferably 5–6 or more feathers). Place the feathers into the clean self-sealing bag.

***Please do not collect naturally fallen feathers, feathers with minimal shafts, or down feathers for submission.***

## Sample Collection & Shipping Instructions

### Blood Sample Collection

1. Clean the bird’s brachial vein area with 70% alcohol
2. Use a sterile lancet to make a tiny puncture
3. Collect 2-3 drops on FTA blood card or plain filter paper
4. Label the card with bird ID/band number immediately
5. Let the card air-dry completely (15-20 minutes) at room temperature
6. Place dried card in a paper envelope — **never use plastic bags**

### Feather Sample Collection

1. Identify 2-3 mature chest feathers with visible white/translucent follicle bases
2. Use clean tweezers to firmly pluck each feather in the direction of growth
3. Verify the follicle (quill base) is intact — no follicle = insufficient DNA
4. Place feathers in a paper envelope labeled with bird ID
5. **Do NOT use:** Naturally fallen feathers, cut feather tips, down feathers, or feathers without visible follicles

### Eggshell Membrane Collection

1. Collect eggshell fragments immediately after hatching
2. Peel a 1-2 cm² piece of the inner membrane from the shell
3. Place membrane in a dry paper envelope
4. Label with parent bird ID and hatch date

### Shipping Instructions

- Place all sample envelopes inside folded A4 paper for physical protection
- Ship via **FedEx International Document Express** or **DHL Express Document**
- Declare as “Scientific samples — non-hazardous, non-infectious biological material”
- Shipping address will be provided upon order confirmation
- Do NOT ship samples in airtight containers — samples must breathe to prevent mold
