FAQs

  • Why is DNA testing not used for bloodline verification?
In racing pigeon competitions, bloodline records and verification are typically completed through written documents and official registration systems, so there is no need for additional bloodline and breed testing.
  • How many days will it take for the samples to arrive, and will they be unusable by then?
Generally, DNA in feathers or blood is stable enough to withstand shipping times of several days to a week without degradation, as long as they are properly stored and packaged.
  • Is the testing accurate given how inexpensive it is?
The accuracy of DNA testing is not related to cost. Many laboratories use automated processes and economies of scale to offer accurate testing at lower prices.
  • Is blood testing more accurate than feather testing?
Modern techniques can extract sufficient DNA from feathers as well. The choice often depends on convenience and the bird’s comfort.
  • Will lab staff mix up the samples?
Reputable labs follow strict protocols to prevent sample mix-ups. They label samples carefully, use barcoding systems, and have multiple checks in place.
  • Why do we need 4-5 feathers instead of just 1-2 feathers?
Providing 4-5 feathers ensures that there is enough material to extract sufficient DNA. More feathers will increase the ability for successful extraction and accurate results.
  • Will the post office allow the mailing of feather samples?
Generally, mailing feather samples is OK. Properly packaging and labeling the samples can help ensure they are accepted and arrive in good condition.
